Sunny Restless Day (A Kyrielle)

With sweat of frustration beading
I would much rather be reading
I wish my work would go away
During this sunny, restless day

Waking to a starless ceiling
Dealing with an empty feeling
The sun burning away the gray
During this sunny, restless day

Painted white over midnight blue
Lost focus is what I’m used to
A vacation might be okay
During this sunny, restless day

I had one of those days at work where I had a difficult time focusing. It was a beautiful day and all I wanted to do was read. That was when “I would much rather be reading / on these sunny, restless days” popped into my head. Had to adjust for syllable count but it was the start.

Shadow Poetry has the best description of the Kyrielle, which is a French form of poetry. It’s written in quatrains, eight syllables per line, with a repeated line. The poet can have as many quatrains as she pleases and can mix and match the rhyming scheme.

  2. Wistful longing? I’ll take more! I liked this, especially with regards to the repeating line. Also, the opener was GREAT. Like a zoom-out to kick it off. Is that sweat? Oh Lord, what’s going o – ooooh.
